Your face isn’t the only place that can begin showing signs of aging. The neck is another common area in which wrinkles and and excess skin can often accumulate. If you’ve noticed these lines and wrinkles around your neck, you might feel as though that aspect of your appearance needs to be addressed in order to make you look as young as you feel.
Wrinkles and lines can have various causes. Around the neck, they are most often caused by a significant amount of excess skin. A neck lift will remove that excess skin in order to make the neck appear smoother and more youthful. By addressing wrinkles and lines on the neck, Dr. Ogilvie can help patients look younger in a way that appears largely natural. In other words, no one will notice you’ve had surgery–they’ll just notice you look great.

Generally, candidates for neck lift surgery will be looking to address deep, significant, and plentiful wrinkles around the neck. These wrinkles can make you look older than you feel–and that feeling can even spread to your face; you might feel as though you look aged, but the problem may be wrinkles on your neck, not on your face.
In some cases, neck lift may be coupled with a facelift procedure in order to give patients a more cohesive appearance. A significantly wrinkled neck can undermine even the more natural looking facelift results and vice versa.
At a glance, good candidates for neck lift surgery will:
- Notice wrinkles and lines spread out over a wide area of the neck.
- Notice deep or significant wrinkles in the neck.
- Want to achieve a smoother, more elegant, and more youthful looking neck.
- Be generally healthy; health should be good enough to endure surgery.
- Maintain realistic expectations about what a neck lift can achieve.
Dr. Ogilvie screens all plastic surgery patients to ensure that they are good candidates. To see if you’re a good candidate for a neck lift by Dr. Ogilvie, contact us to schedule a consultation.
As with many other plastic surgery procedures, a neck lift is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning there is no overnight hospital stay. The vast majority of recuperation and recovery is done at home. A neck lift will usually follow these steps:
Anesthesia — Patients will have a choice of local anesthesia with a sedative or general anesthesia for their neck lift procedure. This decision is usually made in conjunction with Dr. Ogilvie’s recommendations.
Incisions — Incision types will vary depending on the degree of changes patients want. However, most incisions will be made around the ears. When more substantial work is needed, incisions might start around the sideburns and wrap around the bottom of the ear. Once the incisions have been completed, Dr. Ogilvie will remove excess skin and reposition fat deposits as needed. Depending on what is required, an incision under the chin may be needed as well.
Closing the Incisions — Once work is complete, Dr. Ogilvie will close the incisions using sutures. Those sutures will either need to be removed in a few days or will be dissolving.
Results — Patients should begin to see neck lift results a few weeks after surgery, as swelling and bruising begins to subside. Once recovery is complete, the neck will look significantly smoother and more contoured. Patients may also notice benefits around the jawline as well.
