When performed with dermal filler injections, lip augmentation produces a temporary but effective result. Patients who opt instead for a fat transfer lip augmentation procedure will see more longer lasting results. Which approach suits your better will depend on your medical history, your physiology, and your desired final outcome
Achieving more aesthetically pleasing lips, which still fits one’s facial features, has become exceptionally popular with today’s patients, which is the reason why lip augmentation procedures have grown accordingly.
This in-demand procedure increases the size of the lips with the use of injectable fillers or autologous fat, depending on the patient’s desires. In most cases, dermal filler injections are used to temporarily increase the overall size and dimension of the lips, producing an aesthetically desirable overall shape.
How Do I Get Started on my Lip Augmentation?
If you’re interested in learning more about lip augmentation, the best way to learn more is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ogilvie at his Chicago plastic surgery office.
Dr. Ogilvie believes strongly in a patient-oriented approach to each and every procedure, so he takes the time to educate all of his patients about what each procedure can accomplish. He’ll discuss your lip augmentation outcome possibilities and the best way to achieve your desired result.
Candidates who are interested in fat transfer lip augmentation will also need to be a good candidate for a minor liposuction procedure (in order to collect the necessary fat for the lip augmentation).
On the other hand, candidates who are interested in lip augmentation completed via dermal filler injections will need to acknowledge the temporary nature of the results. If you want those results to remain in place for longer than 6-12 months, regular maintenance injections are necessary.

Good candidates for lip augmentation procedures will generally have a strong desire to increase the overall size of the lips. Typically, good candidates for lip augmentation will:
- Want to increase the size of their lips.
- Want their lips to remain (or become more) proportional to their other facial features.
- Have realistic expectations about what lip augmentation can achieve.
- Are generally healthy enough for this procedure.
A lip augmentation procedure performed with dermal filler injections can typically be completed in our Chicago office. A fat transfer lip injection may require a short out-patient procedure in a surgical suite.
Fat Transfer Lip Augmentation — During this procedure, fat will be extracted using a liposuction procedure. The fat will then be treated and injected into the lips in order to make them appear fuller and more aesthetically pleasing. Swelling may take several weeks to subside, at which point you will be able to see and appreciate your final results.
Dermal Filler Lip Augmentation — Dr. Ogilvie will use specially formulated dermal fillers to act as a volumizing and lip defining agent. Anesthetic is not required for these injections and patients are allowed to resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. Results, also, should be immediately noticeable. Dermal filler injections will typically last between 6-12 months.
Regardless of which procedure you choose, Dr. Ogilvie will do everything possible to help you achieve your desired look, while at the same time, take every precaution to prevent complications. While injections with needles is necessary in some areas, typically Dr. Ogilvie uses a blunt cannula for dermal filler or fat injections, which has been shown to decrease complications significantly.
There are benefits and drawbacks to each approach to lip augmentation, so which one is best for you will depend most significantly on your physiology and your desired outcome. Dr. Ogilvie will discuss all of your options with you during your consultation.
Lip augmentation–whether accomplished with dermal fillers or a fat transfer–is a great procedure that can help you feel confident and content with your lips and your smile.
