Gyecomastia surgery is usually performed when a male patient presents with an excess of breast tissue and possibly skin. The term gynecomastia itself applies to the development of excess breast tissue in men. This excess tissue can develop for a variety of reasons, but patients that want to present a more masculine-looking profile are often eager to eliminate as much breast tissue as possible.

Gynecomastia surgery, therefore, is intended to eliminate male breast tissue and create a more masculine silhouette around the torso. The procedure itself usually consists of several body contouring methods and often includes liposuction.
Once recovery is complete, patients will look significantly more angular and athletic in the right areas, highlighting the masculinity of the torso.
The first step in any treatment of gynecomastia symptoms is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ogilvie to discuss your desired results. Consultations take place in Dr. Ogilvie’s Chicago area office. This is also where the vast majority of your follow up care will be conducted. During your consultation, you’ll talk about how gynecomastia surgery may be a good fit for you.
Gynecomastia surgery (sometimes referred to as a male breast reduction) is specifically designed to address male breast tissue in large part due to the significantly different composition (and make-up) of male breast tissue as compared to that of a female.
Dr. Ogilvie believes in taking a patient-centered approach to your care, so Dr. Ogilvie will take all of the time necessary to ensure you understand the procedure, the recovery, and the results. If you have questions about whether you’re a good fit for gynecomastia surgery, the best time to get personalized answers is during your consultation with Dr. Ogilvie.
Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery will:
Nearly all gynecomastia surgery procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients are allowed to return home for their recovery once the effects of the anesthesia begin to wane.
A gynecomastia procedure will usually follow these basic steps:
Anesthesia — Gynecomastia surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, however, local anesthesia may be used in certain circumstances. You will discuss your anesthesia options with Dr. Ogilvie well before your procedure is scheduled to commence.
Incisions — If your gynecomastia is caused primarily by excess fat, incisions may be quite small–only large enough to facilitate liposuction. If, however, excess skin must be eliminated as well, larger incisions may be required. Additionally, depending upon the nipple location, a nipple graft may be required as well. The most appropriate approach will be determined by the makeup of your breast tissue (a combination of both approaches is not uncommon).
Patients will likely experience bruising and swelling immediately after their gynecomastia surgery. Depending on the extent of the gynecomastia procedure, it may take several weeks for swelling to recede enough to properly evaluate your results. Most gynecomastia patients, however, will quickly notice that their silhouette looks more angular and athletic–meaning that their torsos will look significantly more masculine.
The purpose of gynecomastia surgery is to diminish the appearance of male breast tissue. If you want to know more about what gynecomastia surgery could do for you, contact Dr. Ogilvie to schedule a consultation today.

Dr. Ogilvie is very professional and compassionate. I trusted and felt comfortable with him from our first consultation. He took the time to explain the process and what I should expect (from facial fillers). I appreciated the fact that he did not try to recommend any procedures I did not need or want. Dr. Ogilvie thoroughly and patiently answered my questions. I always felt as if I was his only patient. I am so happy with my results. He placed the filler perfectly and my results were exactly what I wanted. What a great experience!
