Introduction to

Calf and Ankle Liposuction

Liposuction of the calf and ankle is performed when you want to eliminate stubborn areas of fat around the lower legs, otherwise known as cankles. These areas of fat can form–and persist–for a wide variety of reasons. In some cases, that fat is related to weight loss; in other cases, it may be simple genetics.

Whatever the case, you might feel uncomfortable, both emotionally and physically, with areas of fat around your calf and ankle that won’t respond to diet or exercise.

Who is a Good Candidate

for Calf and Ankle Liposuction?

Generally speaking, candidates for calf and ankle liposuction are trying to eliminate unwanted fat from around the lower leg and ankle area. In most cases, patients have tried to address these areas of fat using more natural means, such as diet and exercise, without success.

In most cases, a good candidate for calf and ankle liposuction will:

  • Want to eliminate a noticeable amount of fat from the ankles or calves.
  • Have a sizeable and noticeable amount of fat around the ankles or calves.
  • Want results to be contoured to the rest of their leg, so the transformation appears more natural.
  • Be a relatively stable weight; gaining or losing a substantial amount of weight after your liposuction can compromise your results.
  • Be generally healthy enough for surgery.
  • Have realistic expectations about what to expect.
  • Be in a position to take the necessary time off of work (or arrange work from home options) for the requisite recovery period.

If you think you’re a good candidate for calf and ankle liposuction procedures, contact Dr. Ogilvie’s office to schedule a consultation. You’ll be able to discuss your motivations for undergoing calf and ankle liposuction as well as the best way to achieve your desired outcome.

The Calf and Ankle

Lipo Procedure

In many ways, calf and ankle liposuction is very similar to any other liposuction procedure. The difference is that calf and ankle liposuction pay particular attention to the contouring of this area of the body in order to ensure results look seamless and natural.

Calf and ankle liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis, so patients are usually allowed to return home after the initial effects of the anesthesia wear off. In general, calf and ankle liposuction procedures will follow these basic steps:

Anesthesia — Patients can elect either for general anesthesia or for a local anesthetic and sedative combination. These decisions will be made in conjunction with Dr. Ogilvie.

Incision — A small incision will be made in the target area (either the ankle or calf). The incision itself usually measures only milimeters in length. Once the incision is made, a small tube called a cannula is inserted and run back and forth to suction out unwanted fat and contour fat deposits in the area.

and Recovery

Swelling and bruising may be significant and noticeable after your liposuction procedure. Dr. Ogilvie provides all of his patients with individualized recovery instructions designed to maximize comfort and protect your results. Once swelling subsides, you will notice that your calves and ankles will look significantly slimmer in a way that looks quite natural.
